Summary: Braintree's 2.89% + 29¢ is effectively Stripe's price. Compare 8 Braintree alternatives for developers, with fees from $10 to $500 and when each wins.

## Summary

The best Braintree alternative depends on why you are leaving: cost, the pace of product development and support, or PayPal ownership. Braintree's 2.89% + 29¢ is 0.01 points and 1¢ below Stripe's 2.9% + 30¢, so the two cost effectively the same at every ticket size. Paydude charges 2.6% + 25¢, lower than Braintree on both numbers, so it is cheaper at every ticket size — $2.85 against $3.18 on a $100 sale. Stripe suits teams that want the broadest product surface, Adyen and Checkout.com suit large global businesses, and Square suits in-person sellers. Braintree remains the right choice if PayPal and Venmo drive a large share of your checkout conversions, if your business already runs on PayPal, or if you are a verified charity eligible for its 2.19% + 29¢ rate.

Braintree is PayPal's developer platform: a solid card API with PayPal and Venmo built into the same integration. Its published rate is **2.89% + 29¢**, 0.01 points and 1¢ under Stripe's, so on price it is effectively Stripe with PayPal attached. That means the case for leaving it, or for staying, rarely comes down to the rate card alone.

Below are eight Braintree alternatives worth considering, what each costs at published rates, and the specific situation in which each one beats Braintree. We are one of them, so we have tried to be blunt about where we are the wrong answer, the same way we do on our [Paydude alternatives](https://www.paydude.io/resources/paydude-alternatives) page.

> **Check rates before you decide:** These are list prices as published in November 2026. Providers change pricing occasionally, add surcharges for certain card types, and negotiate below list for larger merchants. Your own statement is the best source — work out your [effective rate](https://www.paydude.io/resources/what-is-an-effective-rate) before comparing anyone.

## What Braintree really costs at different ticket sizes

A [flat rate](https://www.paydude.io/resources/what-is-flat-rate-pricing) is two numbers, and which one matters depends on your average ticket. Braintree's two numbers now sit just under Stripe's on both counts, and Paydude's sit under both. Here is the fee per sale at each provider's published starting rate:

**Fee per sale at published domestic card rates, November 2026. Effective rate in brackets. Paydude figures are its starting tier (under $100k a month).**

| Ticket | Braintree (2.89% + 29¢) | Stripe (2.9% + 30¢) | Paydude (2.6% + 25¢) |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| $10 | $0.58 (5.8%) | $0.59 (5.9%) | $0.51 (5.1%) |
| $25 | $1.01 (4.0%) | $1.03 (4.1%) | $0.90 (3.6%) |
| $50 | $1.74 (3.5%) | $1.75 (3.5%) | $1.55 (3.1%) |
| $100 | $3.18 (3.2%) | $3.20 (3.2%) | $2.85 (2.9%) |
| $500 | $14.74 (2.9%) | $14.80 (3.0%) | $13.25 (2.7%) |

**Braintree vs Stripe.** There is no break-even. Braintree's 2.89% + 29¢ is 0.01 points and 1¢ below Stripe's 2.9% + 30¢, so Braintree is cheaper at every ticket size — by 1¢ on a $10 sale, 2¢ on a $100 sale and 6¢ on a $500 sale. On $50,000 a month at a $50 ticket that is $1,735 against $1,750, or $15 a month. On price, the two are effectively the same processor.

**Braintree vs Paydude.** There is no break-even here either. Paydude's 2.6% + 25¢ is lower on both numbers, so it is cheaper at every ticket size, and the gap grows with the ticket: 7¢ on a $10 sale, 33¢ on $100, $1.49 on $500. On the same $50,000 month at a $50 ticket, Braintree costs $1,735 ($20,820 a year) and Paydude $1,550 — $185 a month, or $2,220 a year. From $100k a month Paydude drops to 2.55% + 20¢ and the gap widens.

**Why people still pick Braintree.** If it is not the cheapest option, the reason to choose it is what comes with it: PayPal and Venmo in the checkout through one integration, a natural fit for businesses already built on PayPal, and a 2.19% + 29¢ rate for verified 501(c)(3) charities. Two details are worth knowing before you compare: Braintree adds 1% to transactions presented in a currency other than US dollars, and it does not return its transaction fee when you refund a sale.

Our piece on [when 30 cents costs more than a percentage](https://www.paydude.io/resources/when-30-cents-costs-more-than-a-percentage) explains why the fixed fee dominates small payments. To run your own volume and ticket size, use the [Braintree fee calculator](https://www.paydude.io/resources/tools/braintree-fee-calculator).

## What it adds up to over a year

Per sale the gaps are cents. Over a year at real volume they are not.

**Card fees only, standard domestic cards at a $50 average ticket, at published list rates. Paydude uses its 2.55% + 20¢ tier at $250k a month, which applies from $100k.**

| Monthly volume | Braintree per year | Paydude per year | Stripe per year | Paydude saving vs Braintree |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| $10,000 | $4,164 | $3,720 | $4,200 | $444 |
| $50,000 | $20,820 | $18,600 | $21,000 | $2,220 |
| $250,000 | $104,100 | $88,500 | $105,000 | $15,600 |

## Why developers look for a Braintree alternative

- **Cost.** At 2.89% + 29¢ Braintree is priced like Stripe, and lower published rates exist. Subscription apps, usage top-ups and low-priced SaaS plans feel the fixed fee on every charge: 29¢ is 2.9% of a $10 sale before the percentage is added.
- **Pace of product development and support.** A common complaint from developers is that Braintree's product surface and SDKs have moved more slowly than newer payments APIs, and that support runs through a large merchant-support organisation rather than people who know your integration.
- **PayPal ownership.** Braintree is part of PayPal, which acquired it in 2013. Some businesses prefer not to concentrate checkout, wallet and card processing — and the account-risk decisions that come with them — in one company.

## 1. Paydude — best for a cheaper developer-first API

Paydude is a payment processor and payments API for software businesses: customers, payment methods, payment intents, refunds and signed webhooks, with typed SDKs, an open sandbox and an MCP server for coding agents. If you have integrated Stripe or Braintree, the model will feel familiar.

Cards are 2.6% + 25¢, falling to 2.55% + 20¢ from $100k a month and 2.5% + 15¢ from $1M, with each tier locked for six months once reached. There is **no extra percentage for subscriptions or invoices**, ACH is 0.6% (75¢ minimum, $3 cap), disputes are $12, and there is a $7 monthly minimum. Premium rewards, corporate, business and Amex cards add 0.3%. Saved cards migrate free from any PCI Level 1 processor that will export them. See [Paydude vs Braintree](https://www.paydude.io/resources/paydude-vs-braintree) and [Paydude pricing explained](https://www.paydude.io/resources/paydude-pricing-explained).

**Choose it when** you sell online in the US and want a modern API that costs less than Braintree at any ticket size. **Skip it when** you need PayPal and Venmo in the same integration, in-person hardware, card issuing, global local acquiring, or sales tax handled as a merchant of record.

## 2. Stripe — best for breadth of products

Stripe is the default developer payments platform, with the widest product surface and ecosystem of integrations. At 2.9% + 30¢ it costs effectively the same as Braintree — 0.01 points and 1¢ more per sale — and add-ons such as Stripe Billing (0.7% of billing volume) and $15 disputes sit on top. See [best Stripe alternatives](https://www.paydude.io/resources/best-stripe-alternatives) for the other side of that decision.

**Choose it when** you need products beyond card processing and want the largest ecosystem. **Skip it when** price is the main reason you are leaving Braintree — Stripe would cost slightly more, not less.

## 3. Adyen — best for large global businesses

Adyen prices on [interchange-plus](https://www.paydude.io/resources/what-is-interchange-plus-pricing): interchange at cost, a markup, and a 13¢ processing fee. It acquires locally in many countries, which helps authorisation rates on international cards. It is built for enterprises and not designed for small merchants. See [Paydude vs Adyen](https://www.paydude.io/resources/paydude-vs-adyen) or the [Adyen fee calculator](https://www.paydude.io/resources/tools/adyen-fee-calculator).

**Choose it when** you process large volume across many countries. **Skip it when** you are a small or mid-sized US business — onboarding and minimums are aimed at enterprise.

## 4. Checkout.com — best for negotiated enterprise pricing

Checkout.com is an enterprise payments platform with a developer-friendly API. It does not publish a standard rate card; pricing is **custom and quote-based**, and it is aimed at larger merchants rather than small businesses.

**Choose it when** you have the volume to negotiate and want a direct alternative to Adyen. **Skip it when** you want published, predictable pricing or are processing modest volume.

## 5. Authorize.net — best if you already have a merchant account

Authorize.net is a long-established [payment gateway](https://www.paydude.io/resources/what-is-a-payment-gateway). Its all-in plan is 2.9% + 30¢ plus $25 a month, so it rarely wins on price; its case is for businesses that already hold a [merchant account](https://www.paydude.io/resources/what-is-a-merchant-account) with a bank. See [best Authorize.net alternatives](https://www.paydude.io/resources/best-authorize-net-alternatives).

**Choose it when** your bank relationship is fixed and you just need a gateway in front of it. **Skip it when** you want a modern API and developer experience — that is usually why people leave Braintree in the first place.

## 6. Helcim — best for high, debit-heavy volume

Helcim passes [interchange](https://www.paydude.io/resources/what-is-interchange) through at cost with a published markup, and lowers the markup as volume grows. On debit-heavy volume, where regulated debit interchange is far below a blended card rate, it can beat any flat rate. The trade-off is variable fees and harder reconciliation. Try the [Helcim fee calculator](https://www.paydude.io/resources/tools/helcim-fee-calculator).

**Choose it when** much of your volume is debit and you can live with fees that vary per transaction. **Skip it when** you want a fixed, predictable rate to model margins against.

## 7. Square — best for in-person sales

Square is a point-of-sale system with payments attached, and it has developer APIs too. Online it charges 3.3% + 30¢ on the default Square Free plan, $3.60 on a $100 sale against Braintree's $3.18 and Stripe's $3.20. Square Plus ($49 a month per location) and Premium bring online checkout down to 2.9% + 30¢, as do payments through Square's Payments API. Its strength is hardware and card-present selling. See [Paydude vs Square](https://www.paydude.io/resources/paydude-vs-square) and [best Square alternatives](https://www.paydude.io/resources/best-square-alternatives).

**Choose it when** a meaningful share of your sales happen across a counter. **Skip it when** you are online-only — you would pay Stripe's rate without Stripe's breadth.

## 8. Paddle — best when you need tax handled

Paddle is a [merchant of record](https://www.paydude.io/resources/what-is-a-merchant-of-record): it becomes the legal seller and collects and remits sales tax and VAT worldwide. At 5% + 50¢ it costs far more per payment than Braintree, but the fair comparison is a processor plus a tax service plus your own filing work. See [best Paddle alternatives](https://www.paydude.io/resources/best-paddle-alternatives) or the [Paddle fee calculator](https://www.paydude.io/resources/tools/paddle-fee-calculator).

**Choose it when** you sell software into many countries and do not want to handle tax registration and filing. **Skip it when** you sell mostly in the US and can manage sales tax yourself — you would pay roughly double for something you do not need.

## When to stay on Braintree

Stay if PayPal and Venmo drive a large share of your conversions and you value getting them through one integration, if your business already runs on PayPal, or if you are a verified 501(c)(3) charity on Braintree's 2.19% + 29¢ rate. Stay too if you have already negotiated a rate below list. Moving processors has a real engineering cost, and a small fee gap does not always pay for it.

## How to choose

1. Pull one month of Braintree statements and work out your real [effective rate](https://www.paydude.io/resources/tools/effective-rate-calculator), including disputes and any card-type surcharges.
2. Find your average ticket and price it at each rate. Braintree and Stripe will land within a few cents of each other; Paydude will come out lower at any ticket size.
3. Price the same month at each shortlisted provider's published rate. The [Paydude vs Braintree calculator](https://www.paydude.io/resources/tools/paydude-vs-braintree-fee-calculator) does this for the two of us.
4. Multiply the monthly gap by twelve. If it is small, decide on capability, wallets, support and account risk instead.
5. Confirm your saved cards can be exported and imported before you commit — see [storing payment methods safely](https://www.paydude.io/resources/storing-payment-methods-safely).

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best alternative to Braintree?

It depends on why you are leaving. For a developer-first API that is cheaper than Braintree at every ticket size, Paydude at 2.6% + 25¢. For the broadest product surface, Stripe. For very large global volume, Adyen or Checkout.com. For in-person sales, Square. For global sales tax handled as merchant of record, Paddle.

### Is Braintree cheaper than Stripe?

Barely. Braintree charges 2.89% + 29¢ and Stripe charges 2.9% + 30¢ at published rates, so Braintree is 0.01 points and 1¢ cheaper on every sale — effectively the same price. On a $100 sale Braintree takes $3.18 against Stripe's $3.20. Braintree adds 1% for transactions presented in a currency other than US dollars.

### Is Paydude cheaper than Braintree?

Yes, at every ticket size on standard cards. Paydude's starting tier is 2.6% + 25¢ against Braintree's 2.89% + 29¢, lower on both the percentage and the fixed fee, so on a $100 sale Paydude takes $2.85 against Braintree's $3.18. From $100k a month Paydude drops to 2.55% + 20¢. Paydude adds 0.3% for premium rewards, corporate, business and Amex cards; at 2.9% + 25¢ on those cards it is still cheaper than Braintree's list rate on any sale under $400.

### Who owns Braintree?

Braintree is owned by PayPal, which acquired it in 2013. It is PayPal's developer-focused payments platform and is the usual way to accept cards, PayPal and Venmo through one integration.

### Can I move my saved cards off Braintree?

Usually, yes. Card data can be exported from one PCI DSS Level 1 compliant processor to another on request, so customers do not have to re-enter their cards. Paydude imports saved cards for free from any PCI Level 1 processor that will export them. Subscriptions and payment history are not part of a card export and have to be rebuilt separately.

### How much does Braintree charge on a $100 sale?

Braintree's standard rate is 2.89% + 29¢, so a $100 sale costs $3.18 in fees, a $50 sale $1.74 and a $500 sale $14.74. Stripe costs $3.20, $1.75 and $14.80 on the same sales, and Paydude at 2.6% + 25¢ costs $2.85, $1.55 and $13.25. At $50,000 a month in $50 sales, Braintree comes to $20,820 a year against $18,600 on Paydude.
