Summary: Lemon Squeezy alternatives for indie hackers: Paddle, Polar, Dodo, Stripe Managed Payments, Gumroad and Paydude, with fees and a merchant-of-record test.

## Summary

Stripe acquired Lemon Squeezy in 2024 and is building Stripe Managed Payments as its successor, which is why many sellers are now looking for a Lemon Squeezy alternative. The first question is whether you actually need a merchant of record: if you sell to consumers in many countries, the closest replacements are Paddle, Polar, Dodo Payments and Stripe Managed Payments. If you sell mostly to US customers and can handle your own sales tax, a payment processor costs about half as much per sale, and on $5,000 a month of $15 sales Paydude at 2.6% + 25¢ saves roughly $2,440 a year against 5% + 50¢. Gumroad is the simplest option for creators but the most expensive at 10% + 50¢, and FastSpring prices by quote for larger software sellers. Staying on Lemon Squeezy is reasonable for now if it works for you, but plan where you would go before you are forced to decide.

Lemon Squeezy earned its place with indie hackers by doing one thing well: it let a solo developer sell software, ebooks, templates and subscriptions worldwide without registering for VAT anywhere, because it acted as the **merchant of record**. Then Stripe bought it.

Stripe announced the acquisition in 2024. In January 2026, Lemon Squeezy's CEO wrote that the team had been focused on building **Stripe Managed Payments**, that support and feature work on Lemon Squeezy had slowed as a result, and that the goal was to give Lemon Squeezy users an easy way to migrate. No shutdown date has been announced, and the product is still live, but the direction is clear. That uncertainty is the main reason people search for a Lemon Squeezy alternative.

Below are eight options, what each costs at published rates, and when each one is the right call. We are one of them, and we are not a merchant of record, so we have tried to be plain about when that rules us out — the same approach as our [best Stripe alternatives](https://www.paydude.io/resources/best-stripe-alternatives) guide.

## Lemon Squeezy alternatives at a glance

| Gumroad | 10% + 50¢ (30% via Discover) | $10.50 | Yes | Creators who want a storefront and audience tools |
| FastSpring | Custom/quote-based pricing | Varies | Yes | Established software companies |
| Stripe | 2.9% + 30¢ | $3.20 | No | Builders who want the broadest API and handle tax themselves |

> **Check rates before you decide:** Merchant-of-record pricing moves often and comes with surcharges that the headline hides. Polar, Dodo Payments and Stripe Managed Payments all add about 1.5% for cards issued outside the US, and Dodo adds 0.5% on subscriptions. Read each provider's pricing page for the products you actually sell.

## Fees at different ticket sizes

Fixed per-sale fees matter most on cheap products. On a $10 sale, 5% + 50¢ takes $1.00, a tenth of the price; Paydude takes 51¢.

**Fee per sale on a domestic US card at published rates, November 2026, before international-card, subscription or premium-card surcharges. Paydude is shown at its standard tier. FastSpring is quote-based and left out.**

| Pricing | $10 sale | $25 sale | $50 sale | $100 sale | $500 sale |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Lemon Squeezy, Paddle, Polar free plan (5% + 50¢) | $1.00 | $1.75 | $3.00 | $5.50 | $25.50 |
| Paydude (2.6% + 25¢) | $0.51 | $0.90 | $1.55 | $2.85 | $13.25 |
| Stripe (2.9% + 30¢) | $0.59 | $1.03 | $1.75 | $3.20 | $14.80 |
| Dodo Payments, one-off sale (4% + 40¢) | $0.80 | $1.40 | $2.40 | $4.40 | $20.40 |
| Stripe Managed Payments (about 6.4% + 30¢) | $0.94 | $1.90 | $3.50 | $6.70 | $32.30 |
| Gumroad, direct sale (10% + 50¢) | $1.50 | $3.00 | $5.50 | $10.50 | $50.50 |

## What it adds up to over a year

**Annual fees at a $50 average sale on domestic US cards, published rates, November 2026. Paydude is 2.6% + 25¢ at $10,000 and $50,000 a month and its 2.55% + 20¢ tier at $250,000 a month. Excludes the cost of doing your own tax compliance, which a merchant of record such as Lemon Squeezy covers.**

| Monthly volume | Lemon Squeezy (5% + 50¢) | Stripe (2.9% + 30¢) | Paydude | Paydude saves vs Lemon Squeezy |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| $10,000 | $7,200 | $4,200 | $3,720 | $3,480 |
| $50,000 | $36,000 | $21,000 | $18,600 | $17,400 |
| $250,000 | $180,000 | $105,000 | $88,500 | $91,500 |

At a $50 average sale, Lemon Squeezy's effective rate is 6.0%, Stripe's is 3.5% and Paydude's is 3.1%.

## First: do you actually need a merchant of record?

A [merchant of record](https://www.paydude.io/resources/what-is-a-merchant-of-record) becomes the legal seller of your product. It collects and remits sales tax and VAT, handles disputes and refunds, and pays you what is left. That is worth real money in some businesses and almost nothing in others. Answer these honestly:

1. **Who buys from you?** Consumers in the EU, UK and other countries can create VAT obligations on digital sales from the first sale. Mostly US buyers, especially businesses, is a much simpler tax picture.
2. **How much of your revenue is international?** If it is a small slice, you may be paying a merchant-of-record premium on 100% of sales to solve a problem on 10% of them.
3. **Would you register and file yourself?** Some sellers are happy to use a tax tool and file. Others would rather pay anyone to never think about VAT again. Both are valid.
4. **What does the premium cost you?** At $5,000 a month, the gap between 5% + 50¢ and a processor rate is roughly $200 a month at a $15 average sale (worked out below). Compare that number against the time and tooling tax compliance would actually take.

If the answers point to a merchant of record, the shortlist is Paddle, Polar, Dodo Payments, Stripe Managed Payments, Gumroad and FastSpring. If they point away from one, look at a processor like Paydude or Stripe.

## Worked example: $5,000 a month in $15 sales

Low-priced digital products are where per-transaction fees hurt most, because the fixed cents are a large share of a small sale (see [when 30 cents costs more than a percentage](https://www.paydude.io/resources/when-30-cents-costs-more-than-a-percentage)). $5,000 a month at $15 is about 333 sales.

**Domestic card rates on $5,000 of monthly volume at a $15 average sale, before international or premium-card surcharges.**

| Pricing | Fee per $15 sale | Monthly fees | Yearly fees | Effective rate |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| 5% + 50¢ (Lemon Squeezy, Paddle) | $1.25 | $416.67 | $5,000 | 8.33% |
| 4% + 40¢ (Dodo Payments, one-off sale) | $1.00 | $333.33 | $4,000 | 6.67% |
| 2.9% + 30¢ (Stripe) | $0.735 | $245.00 | $2,940 | 4.90% |
| 2.6% + 25¢ (Paydude) | $0.64 | $213.33 | $2,560 | 4.27% |

Against 5% + 50¢, Paydude saves about **$203 a month, or roughly $2,440 a year**, on this volume. That saving is the price of doing your own tax compliance: Paydude does not collect or remit VAT or sales tax for you, and premium rewards, business and Amex cards carry an extra 0.3%. If tax would cost you more than $2,440 a year in tools and time, a merchant of record is the better deal. Model your own numbers with the [Paydude vs Lemon Squeezy calculator](https://www.paydude.io/resources/tools/paydude-vs-lemon-squeezy-fee-calculator).

## 1. Paydude — best if you sell mostly to US customers

Paydude is a payment processor and payments API for software and online businesses. It is **not a merchant of record**: you are the seller, and sales tax and VAT are yours to handle. In exchange, cards cost 2.6% + 25¢, falling to 2.55% + 20¢ and 2.5% + 15¢ as monthly volume grows, with no extra percentage for subscriptions or invoices, ACH at 0.6% (75¢ minimum, $3 cap) and $12 dispute fees. There is a $7 monthly minimum and no platform fee.

The API will feel familiar if you have used Stripe: customers, payment methods, payment intents, refunds, signed webhooks, typed SDKs, an open sandbox and an MCP server for coding agents. Paydude is a payments API rather than a creator storefront, so things like file delivery, license keys and affiliate programs are yours to build or bring. See [Paydude pricing explained](https://www.paydude.io/resources/paydude-pricing-explained).

**Choose it when** most of your buyers are in the US, you sell SaaS or digital products through your own site, and you would rather keep roughly half the fees than outsource tax. **Skip it when** a meaningful share of your buyers are consumers abroad and you do not want to register for VAT, or when you want a hosted storefront with delivery built in.

## 2. Paddle — best for software sold globally

Paddle is the longest-established merchant of record for software and SaaS, and its published 5% + 50¢ matches Lemon Squeezy exactly, so switching does not change your fees. It handles global tax, subscriptions, and checkout, and it is built for software businesses rather than creators selling one-off files. Our [Paddle fee calculator](https://www.paydude.io/resources/tools/paddle-fee-calculator) shows the cost at your ticket size, and [best Paddle alternatives](https://www.paydude.io/resources/best-paddle-alternatives) covers its trade-offs.

**Choose it when** you run a SaaS or software business selling worldwide and want the most mature merchant of record. **Skip it when** you sell low-priced one-off digital goods, where 50¢ a sale bites, or when most of your customers are domestic.

## 3. Polar — best for developer tools and open source

Polar is a merchant of record aimed at developers, with an open-source codebase and features for selling software, license keys, subscriptions and usage-based billing. Its free Starter plan is 5% + 50¢; paid plans lower the rate to 3.8% + 40¢ ($20 a month), 3.6% + 35¢ ($100 a month) or 3.4% + 30¢ ($400 a month). Cards issued outside the US add 1.5%, and Stripe payout fees pass through.

**Choose it when** you sell developer tools or open-source-adjacent products and your volume justifies a paid plan. **Skip it when** you are small enough that the free plan is your real rate, since that is the same as Lemon Squeezy.

## 4. Dodo Payments — best published merchant-of-record rate

Dodo Payments publishes 4% + 40¢ for domestic US card and wallet payments, the lowest headline merchant-of-record rate on this list. Subscriptions and usage-based billing add 0.5%, and international cards and payment methods add 1.5%, so a subscription paid with a non-US card costs noticeably more than the headline. Check its payout fees as well: its pricing page lists free standard payouts while its FAQ mentions a $5 fee on payouts under $1,000.

**Choose it when** you want a merchant of record and fees are the deciding factor, especially for one-off sales to US buyers. **Skip it when** most of your revenue is international subscriptions, where the surcharges close much of the gap.

## 5. Stripe Managed Payments — best if you want to stay with Stripe

Stripe Managed Payments is the product Lemon Squeezy's team has been building, and the destination Stripe intends for Lemon Squeezy users. Stripe's support documentation prices it as an **additional 3.5% per successful transaction on top of standard Stripe fees**, which works out to about 6.4% + 30¢ on a domestic card. International cards and Stripe Billing charges for subscriptions come on top. It is the most expensive merchant of record here apart from Gumroad.

**Choose it when** you already build on Stripe, want the official migration path, and value staying in one ecosystem. **Skip it when** cost matters most, or when you need features Lemon Squeezy gave you that Managed Payments does not, so check what your storefront, delivery and affiliate setup will look like before committing.

## 6. Gumroad — best for creators who want a storefront

Gumroad is a creator platform first: product pages, a profile storefront, audience email and a Discover marketplace. It has acted as merchant of record for sales tax and VAT since January 2025. It is also the most expensive option, at 10% + 50¢ on direct sales and 30% on sales through Discover. On a $15 ebook that is $2.00 a sale.

**Choose it when** you are a creator who values simplicity and audience tools over fees, or when Discover brings you sales you would not otherwise get. **Skip it when** you sell software or subscriptions at any real volume.

## 7. FastSpring — best for established software companies

FastSpring is a long-running merchant of record for software, SaaS and digital goods. It does not publish its rates; pricing is custom and quote-based. It is geared to established software businesses rather than solo founders launching their first product.

**Choose it when** you have meaningful volume and want a merchant of record you can negotiate with. **Skip it when** you want transparent pricing and self-serve signup.

## 8. Stripe — best for the broadest API, tax on you

Plain Stripe, without Managed Payments, is a processor like Paydude: 2.9% + 30¢ per card, with Stripe Billing adding 0.7% of billing volume for subscriptions and $15 disputes. You handle tax, typically with a tax product on top. Its strength is breadth: an integration for almost everything. See [Paydude vs Stripe](https://www.paydude.io/resources/paydude-vs-stripe) and the [Stripe fee calculator](https://www.paydude.io/resources/tools/stripe-fee-calculator).

**Choose it when** you need Stripe's ecosystem and are comfortable owning tax. **Skip it when** you are choosing a processor on price, where 2.9% + 30¢ plus Billing costs more than Paydude's 2.6% + 25¢ with no subscription surcharge.

## When to stay on Lemon Squeezy

If Lemon Squeezy is working, there is no announced deadline forcing a move, and a rushed migration carries its own risk: subscriptions to rebuild, checkout links to update, and customers to re-bill. Staying is reasonable while you watch what Stripe offers. What is not reasonable is having no plan, so decide now which alternative you would pick and what it would take to move, and keep your product, customer and subscription data exportable.

## How to choose

1. Pull a month of sales and split it by customer country and by one-off versus subscription. That one table answers most of the merchant-of-record question.
2. Work out your current [effective rate](https://www.paydude.io/resources/what-is-an-effective-rate) on Lemon Squeezy with the [Lemon Squeezy fee calculator](https://www.paydude.io/resources/tools/lemon-squeezy-fee-calculator), including the fixed fee on your actual average sale.
3. Price the same month at each shortlisted provider, including the international and subscription surcharges that apply to your mix.
4. If a processor wins by more than tax compliance would cost you, use a processor. If it does not, pick the merchant of record whose surcharges fit your mix best.
5. Before committing, ask how your existing subscriptions and saved payment details would move, since with a merchant of record those relationships sit with the provider.

## Frequently asked questions

### What is the best alternative to Lemon Squeezy?

It depends on whether you need a merchant of record. If you sell to consumers in many countries and want someone else to collect and remit VAT and sales tax, Paddle, Polar, Dodo Payments or Stripe Managed Payments are the closest replacements. If you sell mostly to US customers and can handle your own sales tax, a processor such as Paydude (2.6% + 25¢) or Stripe (2.9% + 30¢) costs roughly half as much per sale.

### Is Lemon Squeezy shutting down?

No shutdown date has been announced. Stripe acquired Lemon Squeezy in 2024, and in January 2026 Lemon Squeezy's CEO said the team had been focused on Stripe Managed Payments, that support and feature work had slowed as a result, and that the goal was to give Lemon Squeezy users an easy way to migrate to Managed Payments. The product remains live, but its long-term future is clearly tied to Stripe.

### What does Stripe Managed Payments cost?

Stripe's support documentation describes Managed Payments as an additional 3.5% per successful transaction on top of standard Stripe processing fees. At Stripe's standard 2.9% + 30¢ that is about 6.4% + 30¢ on a domestic card, with extra charges for international cards and for subscriptions billed through Stripe Billing.

### Do I need a merchant of record to sell digital products?

Not always. A merchant of record is most valuable when you sell to consumers in many countries, because digital sales into the EU, UK and elsewhere can carry VAT obligations from the first sale. If your customers are mostly US businesses, or you are willing to register and file sales tax yourself, a regular payment processor costs much less per transaction.

### Which Lemon Squeezy alternative has the lowest fees?

On published rates, among merchants of record Dodo Payments lists 4% + 40¢ for domestic US cards, below the 5% + 50¢ charged by Lemon Squeezy, Paddle and Polar's free plan. Payment processors that are not merchants of record cost less: Paydude is 2.6% + 25¢ and Stripe is 2.9% + 30¢, but you take on tax compliance yourself.

### How much would I save by leaving Lemon Squeezy?

At published rates and a $50 average sale, Lemon Squeezy's 5% + 50¢ costs $7,200 a year on $10,000 of monthly sales. The same volume costs $4,200 a year on Stripe at 2.9% + 30¢ and $3,720 on Paydude at 2.6% + 25¢, a saving of $3,480 a year against Lemon Squeezy. At $50,000 a month the saving is $17,400 a year. Against that, Stripe and Paydude are not merchants of record, so you collect and remit VAT and sales tax yourself.
