Paydude is not the right answer for every business, and this page says where it is not. Below is each serious alternative with the specific situation in which it beats us.
The honest summary
| Provider | Choose it when |
|---|---|
| Stripe | You need Connect, Issuing, Terminal or the integration ecosystem |
| Adyen | You are large, global, and want interchange-plus with local acquiring |
| Square | Your volume is mostly in person, or you want one system for both |
| Clover / Toast | You are retail or hospitality and need a full point-of-sale |
| Paddle / Lemon Squeezy | You sell internationally and want VAT handled for you |
| Helcim / Stax | You have high, debit-heavy volume and want interchange-plus |
| PayPal | Your customers specifically want to pay with PayPal |
| Braintree | You have a high average transaction and want PayPal's platform |
| Authorize.net | You already hold a merchant account and want a mature gateway |
Stripe
The default, for good reasons. The product surface is far larger than ours — Connect for marketplaces, Issuing, Terminal, Billing, Tax, Atlas — and a decade of ecosystem means almost everything integrates with it already.
Its published rate is 2.9% + 30¢ against our 2.6% + 25¢, so we are cheaper on both components. But if you need Connect, that is not a rate conversation — it is a capability we do not offer. See the Paydude vs Stripe comparison for the detail.
Merchant-of-record providers
Paddle and Lemon Squeezy charge around 5% + 50¢, which looks enormous next to a processor's 2.6%. That comparison is wrong. They become the legal seller and take on global sales tax and VAT registration, remittance, invoicing and fraud liability.
Interchange-plus providers
Helcim and Stax pass interchange through at cost with a disclosed markup. On debit-heavy volume at scale that genuinely beats any flat rate, including ours, because regulated debit interchange is far below what any blended rate can be.
The trade is variance and reconciliation complexity. If your card mix is debit-heavy and you are above roughly $100k a month, it is worth pricing properly rather than assuming a flat rate wins.
In-person providers
Square, Clover and Toast are point-of-sale systems with payments attached. We are a payments API with no hardware, no register and no card-present rates. If most of your volume happens across a counter, this is not a close call.
How to actually choose
Work out your effective rate from a real statement, check what it would be elsewhere in the fee comparison, and multiply the gap by your annual volume. If the difference is small, choose on capability instead — it will matter more.
GOOD QUESTIONS
Frequently asked
What are the main alternatives to Paydude?+
Stripe and Adyen for breadth of product, Square and Clover for in-person payments, Paddle and Lemon Squeezy for merchant-of-record tax handling, Helcim and Stax for interchange-plus pricing, and Braintree or Authorize.net as established flat-rate options.
When is Stripe a better choice than Paydude?+
When you need the product surface — Connect for marketplaces, Issuing, Terminal, Atlas, or the ecosystem of integrations built against Stripe over more than a decade. Stripe's rate is higher but breadth is a genuine reason to pay it.
Is there a cheaper option than Paydude?+
Yes, in specific circumstances. Interchange-plus providers like Helcim usually cost less on debit-heavy volume at scale. Cash App for Business has no fixed fee at all, which wins on very small tickets. Neither is an API-first platform for software businesses.
Which alternative handles sales tax for me?+
Paddle, Lemon Squeezy and 2Checkout act as merchant of record, taking on global sales tax and VAT registration and remittance. Paydude does not — it is a processor, so tax remains your responsibility.
